The Eyes of the Beholder

It was two days after I finished my internship. The status of my Quran really bothered me. I wasn’t able to recite like before and needed a real push. So we decided that I start attending a nearby Quran school. It was just two weeks before the end of the semester and they suggested that I come back after holidays, but I was persistent. This couldn’t wait any longer…

I joined the “revision class”. The students had revised Surah Hajj and were reciting it in turns. It felt beautiful to sit with the People of Qur’an after so long. Alhamdulilah! And I also noticed something different, at the end of each page they discussed similarities with other Surahs, ways to remember certain ayats. It fascinated me, because I had never focused on this before and kept making the same mistakes years after I finished the Quran.

That day as I came home filled with enthusiasm and newly found energy, I sent a voice recording to my siblings sharing two things I learnt that day knowing it will help them too. It was then that one of them said: “Why not write this and share it with others too?”
The tips discussed were many, and they continue each day. The science of “mutashaabihat” “Similarities” in the Quran is vast and articles won’t do any justice to it. Yet, we are asked to convey even if it is a single verse. The first tip I learnt that day is what I want to start with…
As a sister started reading verse 18 of Surah Hajj:

“Do you not see that Allah is He, Whom obeys whoever is in the heavens and whoever is in the earth, and the sun and the moon and the stars, and the mountains and the trees, and the animals and many of the people; and many there are against whom chastisement has become necessary; and whomsoever Allah abases, there is none who can make him honorable; surely Allah does what He pleases.”

She faltered with the order of the Creation mentioned. I smiled because this is something I so often get confused with and only got it perfect immediately after revising. The teacher gently reminded her: “Go from big to small… start from the heavens, then to the earth.. big to small”

In the Heavens from big to small-

1. The Sun

2. The Moon

3. The Stars

Gardens: stars

(okay, one can argue that the stars are bigger, let’s stick to what our eyes can see)

On Earth from big to small-

1. The Mountains

2. The Trees

3. The Moving Creatures.

SubhanAllah! How organized is this verse, why hadn’t I noticed this before? Glory be to the Creator of the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees and the moving creatures. Glory be to Him, to Him we Belong and to Him is our return. May He make us of those moving creatures who submit to Him and prostrate to Him in humility and obedience.
