The first few years of marriage are hard. I cannot tell you how many times I had the thought of ending mine in the first year of my marriage. But I married my husband after doing Istikhara, after consulting Allah, so I turn to Him each time I am in distress. Alhamdulillah, although my husband is far from perfect (just like me), there are many many things that I am grateful for in my marriage.
When it comes down to facing one of the biggest tests in my life i.e., marriage, there are three main things that have helped me:
- Doing everything for the sake of Allah
Every little and big thing I do for my husband and in laws, I make intention that I am doing for the sake of Allah. In this way, if they sometimes don’t appreciate it, my heart is at peace because I wasn’t doing it for them alone in the first place. (My husband does appreciate what I do many times Alhamdulillah)
- Having a daily interaction with the Quran
I am part of a Quran class in which we study the explanation of a few verses every week. I cannot describe how much this has helped me in my married life. Each time I face a problem, I find a verse of the Quran that seems to have been revealed to solve my exact problem! It’s miraculous.
- Making consistent Dua
Whenever my husband behaves in a manner that I do not like, I immediately make Dua for him to behave in a way that would ideally be the best. And overtime, I have seen that my Duas do get answered and he does behave in a better way, Alhamdulillah.
I pray that Allah helps you to become successful in the biggest test of your life. I pray that Allah makes your husband like the Prophet صلى اللّٰه عليه وسلم who was the best to his wives. Ameen.
