Have you ever felt like you wanted something so bad that you made dua for it, yet it never happened?
Have you ever felt like you wanted to give up on your dream because you felt it just wasn’t coming into fruition?
Have you felt like you waited for so long, that the wait wasn’t worth it?
Did you ever just want to give up?
At some point in our lives we have all experienced any one of these feelings and has had negative thoughts and emotions when things seem like they don’t go our way. However, there is hope, because with Allah, there is ALWAYS hope, as He Azza wa Jal has said,
“O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Surah Az Zumar]
Fear not my fellow believers, for the beautiful, peaceful month of mercy, the month of forgiveness, the month of the Quran, the month of Dua is upon us! Once again, Allah Azza wa Jal has blessed us to witness this month in which He sends down to us His many blessings – we just have to work for it. We all know that in this month Allah has given us the ultimate blessing of one night in particular, wherein all of our sins will be forgiven, a night better than one thousand months! A night wherein our duas are answered by Allah, The only One Who answers the dua of His servants. Before we give up on asking Allah for what it is we want in this life and in the hereafter, let us take the time right now and resolve to strive hard in this month of Ramadan to sincerely ask of Allah, particularly searching out the night of Qadr in the last ten nights.
From my own personal experience, I can attest to the fact that making dua in Ramadan, searching out Laylatul Qadr, begging Allah therein and most importantly, making sincere tawbah has brought about the answers to my duas faster than the years that has gone by. I will give you just a few tips that I have found worked for me when making dua InshaAllah.
1. Resolve to make the extra effort this month to pray as much Tahajjud as possible:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reports that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” [Sahih Muslim].
How often do we read about the virtues of the Tahajjud prayer? Allah descends to the lowest heaven and calls out to His servants, saying who is asking for His forgiveness?
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه, that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?” [Sahih Bukhari]
How can we pass up an opportunity like this? Knowing our Lord Most High is listening to us and wanting us to ask of Him alone? SubhanAllah!
2. Seek Laylatul Qadr (Night of Power)
“the night of decree is better than a thousand months” [Surah AlQadr]
A night better than a thousand months, how fortunate are we that every year Allah gives us the opportunity to make dua in a night where our Ibaadah is rewarded immensely! One way to help us in seeking out this blessed night, and by Allah’s Mercy actually praying and making dua in it, is to try our best to wake up every night for tahajjud during Ramadan. We are already waking up early to prepare meals for our families for suhoor, so why not set the alarm clocks a little earlier and take that extra time in Ibaadah! If we are sincere in wanting to pray tahajjud, Allah will make it easy for us.
3. Know exactly what you are going to make dua for
When we are making dua, we have a direct link to Allah Azza wa Jal, and He is waiting to answer our call when we call on Him. What better time to ask of our Lord what we need in our lives – making sure it is halal of course, and seeling His bounties, forgiveness, mercy, sustenance and so many other things that will benefit us both in this world and more importantly in the hereafter?
4. Cry in Sujood
Yes! Do not be afraid to cry to Allah, begging Him, all while prostrating yourself to Him. We are closest to Allah when we are in sujood, and our hearts are softened when we cry to Allah, knowing that He alone can hear us, can bring us comfort and can answer us. We are indeed His slaves and we should be proud to cry out to him alone for our needs. Use this time in particular to beg Allah for forgiveness as well as to thank Him for everything He has given us be it big or small, for being grateful is key to earning Allah’s favour. What better combination than crying our hearts pains and desires to Allah while in sujood, in the last part of the night, during the month Ramadan? I can think of nothing better during this time.
5. Allah will answer when He decides it is best for us
Know that no natter what we ask Allah for, it will only come to us when He Azza wa Jal decides that it is best for us. We should not be hasty in making our duas, and at the same time we should not be impatient in waiting for Allah to reply to us. Allah is Ar Rahmaan – The Most Merciful, for He will not leave us empty-handed, and He is Ar Razaaq – The Provider, for He will surely give us what we need, when we need it and in what way He sees fit. We just have to understand that Allah knows what is best for us, better than we think we know for our own-selves.
Let us then strive in this Blessed month of Ramadan to turn to Allah wholeheartedly, sincerely and with hope in His Mercy. Let us make this Ramadan our best yet, by becoming the best Muslims we are capable of being, the best Muslims we are meant to be. Remember, Allah gifted us with Islam when we didn’t ask for it, shouldn’t we turn to him and be grateful for this gift?
